Did you know that in birds, the rate at which life-sustaining chemical reactions occur in the body is the fastest of all animals? The energy needed to generate these vital activities is known as metabolism.

Based on their body size, birds require relatively large amounts of food to generate this energy. In fact, if a 175 pound human, pound for pound (or gram for gram), were to eat the same amount of food each day as a hummingbird, he/she would have to eat 175 pounds potatoes, 28 eggs, 100 slices of bread, 50 cups of milk and 17 pounds of hamburger!

Remember, this is compared to a hummingbird. Larger birds have a considerably slower metabolism. However, it still illustrates the incredibly high energy requirements needed to sustain birds' daily activities.
